Awesome Moments In Gaming – Portal: The Cake Is A Lie!

spoilerwarning

Portal is possibly one of the most original and unique games out there. Developed by Valve, the same company behind the Half Life series, Portal puts you in the shoes of Chell, the subject of a strange spatial experiment.

At the beginning of the game, you awake in a sterile white facility with no clue as to why you are there, or even where ‘there’ is. As you progress through numerous test chambers armed with only your trusty portal gun (a device with which you create portals and thereby solve the game’s numerous puzzles), you are guided by the computerized voice of GLaDOS, who promises you that if you make it through the chambers you will be rewarded with a tasty cake.

And so, you diligently move through each increasingly difficult (and dangerous) puzzle, all the while picturing that delicious reward. But as you go, you start seeing messages scrawled on the walls from previous participants of the test. “The cake is a lie!” the writing reads. Doubts begin to creep in.

Nevertheless, you continue on, trusting in GLaDOS to deliver you to your chocolatey goal. Right up until she tries to kill you.

After completing all of the test chambers, you board a moving platform that GLaDOS promises will take you to your cake. It then proceeds to take you to an incinerator. Time for a daring escape!

Combined with the GLaDOS’ excellent dialogue and the superb voice acting of Ellen McLain, this is not only an awesome moment in gaming, but one of the biggest rejections in history. I mean, everyone’s been rejected, but has any potential date ever tried to fry you alive? Uh, don’t answer that.
